Research into screenplay conventions
A screenplay is a structured script of a film written by screenwriters.
The standard screenplay format is:
12-point courier font
1.2 inch left margin
1 inch right margin
1 inch top and bottom margins
Approximately 55 lines per page regardless of paper size
Actor parenthetical
Dialogue speaker names
Transitions are capitalized
Dialogue 2.5 inches from the left side of the page
Page numbers
No matter the genre or style of film, the script follows the same sort of structure.
It usually begins with a fade in “FADE IN:” which represents a metaphorical curtain revealing the screen at a cinema. Then the scene heading (slug line) which briefly describes where and when the scene takes place. “INT./EXT. LOCATION - TIMEOFDAY”
Then there are subheaders which explains when the scene takes place compared to another time or place e.g. “Later that day”. Then there are action lines which say what happens in this scene; these include:
Character description
Scene description
Character or object action
Then whenever someone speaks, no matter if its on-screen or a narrator, the name is written then the dialogue which goes under the name.
Parenthetical are mini directions to show how a line is supposed to be read and camera shots can sometimes be written down only if they have extreme importance and context.
